Handling Depression and Anxiety

Anxiety, depression and related feelings can often feel heavy – like a weight pulling you down, preventing you from doing the things you want to do. At its worst, it can feel so heavy it seems impossible to move. I’ve struggled with this too. I used to feel consumed by it. There are many ways of handling anxiety and depression – and they’re all valid provided they help you. What I’m going to share here may be slightly different from what you’ve read in the past about coping with those heavy moods. It works for me and I hope it does the same for you.

Don’t Ignore It

Because heavy moods like anxiety and depression feel terrible, it’s natural to want to ignore them, to push them aside and try to pretend like they’re not there. But because these heavy feelings have something to teach us, they only get stronger, louder, heavier when we try to pretend they’re not there. Instead, fully acknowledge their presence in your life – without judgement. There is no shame in ANY feelings you’re experiencing. Let me say that again. There is NO SHAME in any feelings you’re experiencing. Allow yourself to feel the feelings. To name them and experience them at whatever level you need to.

Embrace Your Anxiety and Depression

I mean this far more literally than just accepting your feelings. In your mind, give your heavy feelings an image. Then envision yourself hugging it. Loving it. I know, this sounds nuts. But here’s the thing. Anxiety, depression, and heavy moods almost always leave us feeling bereft and unloved. So, by literally hugging those feelings in your mind you’re removing that layer of the emotion.

Thank Your Depression and Anxiety

These heavy moods feel simply AWFUL. BUT – they’re here to TEACH us something. Even if you don’t know what the lesson is, thank your anxiety and depression for the lessons they provide. You’ll start to feel lighter and the lessons will become easier to determine.

Continue hugging and thanking your anxiety and depression each time the feelings arise. Over time, you’ll see that the heavy moods are outweighed by the lighter ones and the lessons embedded in the anxiety and depression are easier to find.

YOU ARE WORTH IT! These challenging lessons are being given to you because you have something incredibly valuable to share with the world. Something only YOU can provide. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Friends, family, medical professionals – they’re all here to help you. And so are your guides! YOU CAN DO THIS! I believe in you! Let that be enough for today as you practice hugging and thanking your heavy moods.
