Gut vs Brain – How to Tell the Difference

(Last Updated On: February 16, 2018)

“Intuition will tell a thinking mind where to look next.”
– Jonas Salk

We’re all told, “listen to your gut,” “follow your heart/soul,” “trust your intuition.” But how do you know if it’s your intuition guiding you or the louder, more prominent thoughts of your brain getting in the way? The truth is, there are solid signs – thoughts, physical responses and feelings, that clue you in. As you get more tuned in to your intuition by paying attention to these signs, your brain get quieter and your intuition can speak more loudly. To tell the difference between your gut and your brain, pay attention to these signs.

Thoughts That Let You Know It’s Your Intuition Guiding You

Even though your brain is giving you input (often counter to what your intuition is saying), it’s able to multitask and give you feedback on your intuition as well. When you’re tapped into your intuition – to what makes you soul happy – you may have thoughts like:

  • This is a great idea!
  • I love this!
  • Oh! I don’t know where that came from, but it’s perfect!
  • Cool!
  • You get the idea…
Physical Responses to Your Intuition

Sometimes it can be tough to sift through all the thoughts to know which ones go with your intuition and which ones are your brain being your brain. To help you clue in, pay attention to your body. Most people experience some type of physical response when hearing/seeing/doing something that’s right for their soul. These may include:

  • All over warmth
  • Tingling in the head or arms
  • Goosebumps
  • Chills
  • A combination of these
Feelings in Response to Your Intuition

Coupled with tapping into your intuition comes emotional responses. You can use these to know if you’re following your soul or listening to your logic brain (bear in mind, they may even agree sometimes. Be happy when that happens!) As an added check-in to see if you’re intuition is getting a fair say, check for the following feelings:

  • Inner peace
  • Excitement
  • Joy
  • Wonder/Awe
  • A sense of connectedness
  • Comfort (for the long term results – short term actions may still be uncomfortable sometimes.)

If you’re just starting to figure out how to connect to your intuition, use this list to check-in with yourself regularly, particularly for large/important decisions. As you get more comfortable with it, you can begin to use it for more and more moments in your life. Over time, it becomes second nature.

As you get increasingly comfortable listening to your intuition, you may also discover other gifts rising to the service. Things such as clairvoyance (or any of the other 6th senses,) oracle or tarot reading, automatic writing, mediumship, etc. You’re also likely to experience a deeper connection to spirit and your spirit guides. Please, don’t let any of this scare you. It’s simply a positive result of your increased ability to connect with your intuition. Instead, try taking a class to achieve greater understanding of your emerging gifts.
